Alloy 347/347H
Alloy 347 Stainless Steel in Waste Heat Recovery
Today, a multitude of industries are making use of recovered energy for a substantial savings in operating expenses every year. These industries are investing in waste heat recovery units that utilize unburned, but combustible fuel, sensible and latent enthalpy discharge from exhaust gas mixtures, and sensible heat discharge in liquid waste. The profitability of such an investment in waste heat recovery greatly depends on the efficiency of one of the unit’s key components – the heat exchanger/recuperator
Stainless steel is used in the production of heat exchangers/recuperators because it has a very good resistance to corrosion and can be used in a multitude of high temperature applications. Many industrial heat exchagers/recuperators are made from type 347 stainless steel plate. Type 347 stainless steel is stabilized by the addition of columbium and operates at higher temperatures than 304 stainless steel. This high temperature stainless steel has excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion after exposure to temperatures in the chromium carbide precipitation range of 800-1500˚F. Type 347 stainless steel also has corrosion resistance comparable to 304 stainless steel.
Sandmeyer Steel Company stocks a variety of stainless steel grades for high temperature applications, such as waste heat recovery. Type 347 stainless steel plate is available in thicknesses from 3/16” through 4”. In addition, Sandmeyer offers type 347H, which is the higher carbon version of the alloy developed for enhanced creep resistance and for even higher strength at temperatures above 1000˚F.
